Asian regionalism has progressed through paths and contexts, different in contrast to European integration. Given external constraints in the form of rivalry between major powers and internal obstacles from the presence of diverse cultures, institutions and rules, Asia has been challenged in establishing its own identity and status despite sharing a regional common history of colonization, the Cold War and globalization. Amid this, China’s rise has had a profound impact on the stability and prosperity of Asian countries, with repercussions on the global level. Since the East Asian financial crisis, China has emerged as a “Responsible Power” in East Asia and a global power rival of the United States, with ramifications for regional politics, economies, and society and culture. In this context, how does China view Asia? How can Asia co-exist peacefully with China? How can Asian countries chart their own way through the fierce US-China rivalry over a prominent role in Asia?
The Asia-China Dialogue 2021: Toward a Peaceful and Brighter Future invites prominent experts from across diverse Asian countries to discuss the central theme of: ‘how can Asia coexist with China?’ The conference will be held online on November 4-5, 2021 and is divided into 3 thematic sessions, along with a roundtable plenary session.
